Why African Projects Need a Different Selection Logic
Buying solar street lights for Africa is not the same as buying for Europe or East Asia. High ambient temperatures, heavy seasonal rain, dust harmattan winds and unstable logistics all punish under-specified equipment. A light that works fine in a temperate climate can fail in 18 months in Kano or Accra. This guide walks through the six decisions that matter most.
1. Match Wattage to the Application, Not the Catalog
Suppliers love quoting peak wattage; buyers should think in lumens and pole height:
- Rural roads & community paths (4–6 m pole): 30–60 W integrated lights are usually enough.
- Urban streets & estates (6–8 m pole): 60–120 W, ideally with an MPPT controller.
- Highways & main roads (8–12 m pole): 150–300 W split systems with larger panels.
- Compounds, schools, car parks: 50–100 W all-in-one units on short poles or walls.
Oversizing wastes battery capacity and money; undersizing delivers dark roads and complaints. Ask the supplier for a photometric simulation (DIALUX) before ordering in bulk.
2. Battery Chemistry Is the Biggest Cost Driver
Insist on LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) cells with 6,000+ cycle life. Lead-acid and cheaper lithium cells degrade fast in heat: after 300–500 cycles a lead-acid bank may hold less than half its rated capacity, which shows up as lights dying at 2 a.m. in the rainy season. Quality LiFePO4 lasts 5–8 years of daily cycling and tolerates the 45 °C+ enclosure temperatures common in the Sahel.
3. Check the Protection Ratings That Actually Matter
- IP65 minimum, IP66 preferred — for lamp head and battery compartment separately, not just the fixture as a whole.
- Wind load rating of the pole — coastal and harmattan regions need poles engineered for the local wind zone, typically 140 km/h resistance for 6–8 m hot-dip galvanized steel.
- Anti-corrosion treatment — hot-dip galvanizing (Q235 steel) with powder coating survives humid coastal climates like Lagos or Mombasa far better than painted mild steel.
4. Solar Panel Sizing and Controller Quality
The panel must recharge a full night's consumption even on cloudy days. A good rule of thumb: panel wattage ≥ 1.5–2× the LED wattage in most of West and East Africa (4.5–5 peak sun hours). MPPT controllers harvest 20–30% more energy than PWM in hot weather and are worth the premium for any project above 60 W.
5. Lighting Mode and Autonomy
Specify lights with:
- At least 2–3 rainy-day autonomy (battery sized for 48–72 h without sun).
- Motion-sensor dimming (30% brightness, 100% on motion) — this can double effective battery life on low-traffic roads.
- Time-control + light-control dual switching rather than light-control only.
6. Supplier Verification Checklist
Before you place a bulk order:
- Ask for real project photos with locations, not renders — and call one or two references.
- Request a sample unit and tear it down: check cell brand, potting, heat-sink weight and cable glands.
- Confirm certifications: CE, RoHS, ISO 9001 factory audit; IP test report for the exact model.
- Clarify warranty terms in writing — 3 years full-machine warranty is the industry standard for quality factories.
- Confirm spare-parts availability (battery modules, controllers) for 5+ years.
Quick Selection Checklist
| Project type | Pole height | LED power | Battery | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Village road | 4–6 m | 30–60 W | LiFePO4 ≥ 30 Ah @12.8 V | All-in-one OK |
| Estate street | 6–8 m | 60–120 W | LiFePO4 ≥ 60 Ah | MPPT controller |
| Highway | 8–12 m | 150–300 W | LiFePO4 ≥ 100 Ah | Split system, wind-rated pole |
| Compound / school | Wall / 4 m | 50–100 W | LiFePO4 ≥ 40 Ah | Flood or AIO |
Woneng's AIO integrated series (30–200 W) and AIT split series (60–300 W) cover all four scenarios above, with LiFePO4 batteries rated for 6,000+ cycles, IP66 housings and a 3-year full-machine warranty.
